Make Cell Phone Battery Last Longer

Turn the phone off. If you don't plan on answering the phone while you're sleeping or after business hours, just turn it off. Do the same if you are in an area with poor or no signal, such as a subway or remote area, where your phone constantly searching for better connection. Some phones have an automatic power save feature; so, enable it. If you don't need to receive or make calls then disable the phone functionality (flight mode). The best way to ensure longer battery life is to make sure you have a great signal where you use your phone.

Stop searching for a signal. When you are in an area with poor or no signal, your phone will constantly look for a better connection, and will use up all your power doing so. The best way to ensure longer battery life is to make sure you have a great signal where you use your phone.

Switch off vibrate function and use just the ring tone. The vibrate function eats additional battery power. Keep the ring tone volume as low as possible.

Turn off phone's back light. The back light makes the phone easier to read in bright light. However, the light also uses battery power. If you can get by without it, your battery will last longer. If you have to use the back light, many phones will let you set the amount of time to leave the back light on. Shorten that amount of time. Usually, one or two seconds will be sufficient. Some phones have an ambient light sensor, which can turn off the back light in bright conditions and enable it in darker ones.

Avoid using unnecessary features. Such as camera or connect to the Internet. Flash photography can drain the battery quickly.

Keep calls short. This is obvious, but how many times someone on his phone say, "I think my battery’s dying," and then continue his conversation for several minutes! Sometimes, the dying battery is just an excuse to get off the phone (and it's a good one, too!), but if you really need to conserve the battery, limit your talk time.

Turn off Bluetooth. It will drain your battery very quickly.

Keep off WIFI, GPS, and infrared features except when you need them.

Turn the brightness of display to the lowest setting.

Use GSM rather than 3G - Using phone in 3G / Dual Mode will drain the battery quicker than if you just use GSM mode - have a look at your phones spec and you'll see it will quote two different battery life times - normally 50% more for pure GSM use.
For smartphones avoid using moving or animated pictures or videos as background. Animated backgrounds will drain the battery faster.

Use a black background whenever possible. AMOLED screens use a less power displaying black instead of white. When web browsing use sites like www.bGoog.com that display a black Google background instead of white.

Prolong the life of battery:
  • Initialize a new battery. New batteries should be fully charged before their first use to obtain maximum capacity. Ignore the phone telling you that the battery is full—this is normal but is not accurate if the battery is not initialized.
  • Avoid fully discharging battery Batteries' life is shortened every time you fully discharge them. Instead, charge them when the battery meter shows one bar left.
  • Keep the battery cool. Your battery will last longest if used near room temperature, and nothing wears on a battery like extended exposure to high temperatures. Avoid leaving the phone in a hot car or in direct sunlight. In addition, check the battery while it’s charging. If it seems excessively hot, your charger may be malfunctioning.
  • Charge the battery correctly, in accordance with its type. Most newer cell phones have lithium-ion batteries, while older ones generally have nickel-based batteries. Read the label on the back of the battery or in the technical specifications in the manual to determine which yours is.
  • Regardless of the battery type, use only a charger rated for your battery, and discontinue use of a charger that causes the battery to heat up excessively.
  • Store batteries properly. If your battery will be out of use for a while, remove it from the phone and store it in a cool and dry place.
  • Clean the battery terminals. Terminals may accumulate dirt, which reduce the efficiency of energy transfer. Clean them with a cotton cloth by rubbing or use isopropyl alcohol.               Be careful: solvents, such as acetone or nail polish remover dissolve plastic.
Indications for battery failure:
  • The usable time after recharging will be shortened.
  • The battery becomes unusually warm during a recharge cycle.
  • The battery becomes warm during phone use.
  • The battery case may become swollen. This can be detectable by touching or viewing the phone's back cover getting bump. A healthy battery's case is flat.
